โ€œActually, Iโ€™m feeling much better.โ€

Claudia Stevens, Samiyahโ€™s business partner and best friend closed the office door and made herself comfortable in one of the leather chairs that sat in front of Samiyahโ€™s desk. They owned a small business in the Chicago area and specialized in financial planning.

โ€œYou know you can tell me anything, right?โ€

โ€œYes, Iโ€™m not holding back. Iโ€™m fine.โ€

Claudia didnโ€™t believe her. She studied Samiyah. โ€œOkay, whatโ€™s going on?โ€

Samiyah wondered if she should tell her about Jonas, then opted for another conversation first. She told her about the conversation with her now ex-husband David. Rehashing the details brought tears to her eyes. Samiyah and David had been going through a divorce for over a year. Theyโ€™d decided to settle out of court, but at the last minute, Samiyah wanted to fight for her marriage. She didnโ€™t know why. She wasnโ€™t even in love anymore, but she felt a sense of duty to make sure sheโ€™d done everything she could to make it work. In the end, it was David who wanted to leave.

โ€œHoney, I absolutely donโ€™t know why youโ€™re here. I told you to take some time off,โ€ Claudia said. โ€œWe have Selena and Octavia here to fill in. Itโ€™s not a problem. Iโ€™ve told you this.โ€

โ€œThat was my plan. I could use a little time, but what about the emergency phone call I got this morning? Selena didnโ€™t sound so sure of herself. I had to calm her down and tell her to serve the clients' coffee and croissants until I got here. She should know that much.โ€

Claudia waved her off. โ€œGirl, Selena had a client in her office and three in the waiting room, and she was the only one here. Since she has no idea whatโ€™s going on in your personal life, she wasnโ€™t aware you would be taking time off. I was running a little late, but trust me, I got this.โ€

Samiyah pursed her lips. โ€œI donโ€™t know. What had you running late this morning?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s just say I had a long night.โ€

Samiyah shook her head and laughed, โ€œWhat did I tell you about picking up random guys at the club? Youโ€™ve got to be over it by now.โ€

Samiyah was one to talk. Didnโ€™t she just get through seducing a stranger this morning? Had she not woken up in his bed? Samiyah threw those thoughts to the back of her mind.

โ€œYeah, yeah, I hear you, but youโ€™re not the only one who wants a love life.โ€

โ€œYou can have it; Iโ€™m done with it.โ€

โ€œWhat does that mean? Youโ€™re not crossing over to the other side, are you?โ€

Samiyah threw her head back and laughed, โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œWell, letโ€™s just be clear.โ€ They both laughed. โ€œItโ€™s good to see you smile, youโ€™ve been so down lately,โ€ Claudia mentioned.

โ€œIt feels good to laugh. Letโ€™s have a quick pow-wow to make sure Selena and Octavia are on top of their game. I canโ€™t very well leave if theyโ€™re feeling under pressure.โ€

Claudia picked up the phone and dialed each of their extensions. โ€œCome see us, please,โ€ she said when they answered.

Selena Strauss glided into the room with a notepad in hand. She was fresh out of college and always willing to learn. During the interview process, Samiyah took an immediate liking to her, offering her a career pending a clear criminal background check. Octavia Davenport was close behind her. Octavia had six years of experience in financial planning before coming on board, but she was used to having her boss breathing down her neck.

Things worked differently at S & M Financial Advisors. โ€œDo either of you have clients right now?โ€ Samiyah asked.

Selena spoke first, โ€œIโ€™ve got one coming in fifteen minutes.โ€

โ€œMy next appointment will be here any moment,โ€ Octavia glanced at her watch.

โ€œThis will be quick, have a seat.โ€

They obliged. โ€œSelena, I know being here is new for you and Octavia I know youโ€™re also getting used to the way things work around here. Do either of you have any concerns or questions?โ€

โ€œThis is about this morning, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Selena inquired.

โ€œYes and no,โ€ Samiyah confirmed. โ€œClaudia and I want to make sure you ladies are both comfortable with your workload. When everyone is comfortable with what theyโ€™re doing, things will work smoothly, and thatโ€™s what we all want.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t sure if I needed to reschedule some of your appointments that came in this morning. When you didnโ€™t show up, I kind of freaked out. Sorry,โ€ Selena said, biting her lip.

โ€œThatโ€™s my fault,โ€ Claudia spoke up. โ€œSamiyah will be taking some time off for the next week, and during that period, Iโ€™ll be handling her clients.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s when she can make it to work on time.โ€ Samiyah leveled her with a glare. Selena and Octavia chuckled and cut their eyes at Claudia.

โ€œOkay, Okay,โ€ she repeated, โ€œYou got me. I wonโ€™t be late anymore.โ€

โ€œLadies, I want you to know if youโ€™re not sure about something, donโ€™t panic. Call my cell, tell me whatโ€™s going on and Iโ€™ll walk you through it.โ€ Samiyah glanced at the wall clock. โ€œYou should go check to see if your clients are in. Oh, and relax, we are not going to be breathing down your neck. We trust youโ€™ll get your jobs done right, thatโ€™s why we hired you. There are always breakfast croissants in the kitchen. Our longtime friend Larry comes in to bring fresh sandwiches every morning. He delivers to everyone in this office building. Help yourselves.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ Octavia and Selena smiled.

โ€œOh, have you ladies picked out your dresses for the auction?โ€

Selena clasped her hands together, โ€œYes, Iโ€™m so excited.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got mine, too. We went at the same time,โ€ Octavia said.

โ€œOh, nice! Iโ€™d love to see them,โ€ Samiyah said.

โ€œIโ€™ll show you a picture in a minute,โ€ Octavia stuck her head out the door, โ€œWeโ€™ve got company ladies.โ€

They left to tend to their clients.

โ€œWhat time are you departing?โ€ Claudia asked.

Samiyah glanced at her wall clock, โ€œIn about an hour.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, I didnโ€™t see your car outside, whatโ€™s wrong with it now?โ€

A pleasant smile fluttered across Samiyahโ€™s face. โ€œAbout thatโ€ฆ after everything that happened with David, I went to a bar for drinks.โ€

โ€œWithout me?โ€

โ€œOh girl, you were too busy getting your groove back.โ€

โ€œI couldโ€™ve found my groove wherever you were. Donโ€™t try and put this on me!โ€

โ€œDid you hear what you just said? Thatโ€™s an indication that you need to stop picking up randoms!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t change the subject,โ€ Claudia said, dismissing her last statement.

Samiyah gave details about the bar incident and waking up in Jonasโ€™s bed. She left out the part about her seduction. This time Claudia threw her head back and yelled, โ€œOooou! Oooou! Oooou!โ€

โ€œSsssssh, girl we have clients in the building, have you lost your mind!โ€

Claudia cupped a hand over her mouth, โ€œIโ€™m sorry Iโ€™m just so excited for you. He is just what you need.โ€

โ€œHow do you know that? I donโ€™t even know him, Claudia. He was just mister right now, thatโ€™s it! So, donโ€™t get all extra because I know how you are.โ€

โ€œListen, you canโ€™t lie to me. A handsome man comes to your rescue. Then, you slept in his bed, and he didnโ€™t take advantage? Are you crazy?โ€ Claudia threw her arms up. โ€œI canโ€™t ever catch a break like that. You lucky girl, Iโ€™m so jealous.โ€

Samiyah cracked a smile and shook her head. โ€œYou are a piece of work, you know that?โ€

โ€œI do, but you know Iโ€™m right. You better not let that man slip through your fingers!โ€

โ€œClaudia, please, Iโ€™ve been divorced one day. Does it look like Iโ€™m trying to throw myself into another relationship? And another thing, what makes you think this man wants one? Heโ€™s some famous ex-boxer anyway. Iโ€™m sure he has plenty of women to go around.โ€

โ€œFamous ex-boxer? Whatโ€™s his full name?โ€

Samiyah shrugged her shoulders. โ€œJonas Alexander Rose.โ€

Claudiaโ€™s eyes almost popped out of their sockets. โ€œAs in one of the seven of the Rose brotherโ€™s clan?โ€

Samiyah thought about it for a minute. Sheโ€™d heard about the famous Rose brothers and some of their ventures, but sheโ€™d never given it much thought. She shrugged.

โ€œPossibly.โ€

Claudia got up out of her seat and left Samiyahโ€™s office. When she returned, Claudia slapped a magazine down on Samiyahโ€™s desk and pointed, โ€œIs Jonas Alexander Rose this brother right here?โ€

The Time magazine read,

The 100 Most Influential People in The World, Jonas Alexander Rose, One of Chicagoโ€™s Elite Seven of the Rose Brothers.

Seven insanely gorgeous men graced the cover, with Jonas standing in the forefront. They were all impeccably dressed in tailored suits, with Jonas wearing boxing gloves. His pose showed strength and power with his boxing gloves meeting up fist to fist in the middle of his stance. His intimidating glare was transparent in his posture, causing a tingle to run down Samiyahโ€™s spine.

โ€œGirl, your mouth is hanging open!โ€ Claudia said. โ€œI take it by your silence this is him.โ€

Samiyahโ€™s office phone rang. With Samiyah still speechless, Claudia reached down and hit the speaker button. โ€œSamiyah Manhattan,โ€ Claudia announced.

โ€œItโ€™s Selena, Mrs. Manhattan. You have a visitor.โ€

Samiyah and Claudia turned towards the glass office windows simultaneously. Jonas Alexander Rose stood in the waiting room, talking to one of the female clients. Claudia turned back to Samiyah and swatted her across the arm. โ€œYou lucky, lucky girl!โ€
